Quick post on Al Helfer, the recipient of the 2019 Ford C. Frick Award, who nows enters the hallowed halls of the Baseball Hall of Fame! A 3 decade career, Helfer did play-by-play for many teams and broadcast 7 World Series, 10 All-Star Games, and 14 no-hitters, including his last, and what he often cited as his favorite (including just after it ended, below), Catfish Hunter’s perfect game on May 8, 1968 (during only the Oakland A’s second-ever homestand!), as his career was winding down. The 9th inning is linked below, with the last pitch starting at 6:34 (STRIKE THREE, THE BOY HAS PITCHED A NO-HITTER!):

Also, here’s a broadcast from earlier in Al’s career, calling the 1945 World Series, and the first half of the deciding Game 7. “Big handsome Al Helfer” is introduced and starts at 13:28. Enjoy!
