From the Sporting News for Thanksgiving, 1928, by Al Demaree. Looks like everyone involved with baseball has a lot to be thankful for, especially the Babe himself (note Babe Ruth is also accurately holding up his left hand!), referring to his cooking the Birds of St Louis by socking 3 home runs in the deciding Game 4 of the World Series against the Cardinals. And as for the umpire counting his blessings, well, not much has changed in the grand old game, has it!
Incidentally, Al Demaree himself was a pretty good pitcher in an 8 year career, including winning 19 for the Phillies in 1916, but after retiring from baseball had a career as a cartoonist that lasted for decades, including regular features in the Sporting News, and creating artwork for various baseball card sets.
As for myself, I’m thankful for every reader that finds his way to my humble blog, which is a labor of love that I greatly enjoy, and hope you all have a wonderful holiday with friends and family, as we all count the days to spring and the return of those “old box scores”!
